Sulphides
The large, handmade, transparent marbles with an object inside
are called "sulphides". They are the most popular
and highly valued of all collectible marbles. Not only are
they the most popular, but they are also the most expensive
as well!
Records from the Museum for Glass Art, in the German province
of Thuringen, show that independent crafts people in the village
of Lausche were producing marbles with inset animals and other
motifs in the 1850's.
The most common method for inserting the object into the
marble was for one glass worker to gather the glass on the
front of the rod, while another glassworker gently pressed
the object into the soft glass.
Glass from the edges of the newly forming marble was then
folded over the object until it became totally enclosed within
the marble. The glass was then carefully smoothed down to
eliminate any bubbles of air.
Once the air bubbles had been removed, the marble was then
probably rounded on a marver after which marble scissors were
used to remove the new marble from the glass rod.
